A Method to Identify Sand and Dust Storm Using EOS-Terra/MODIS Data

As a kind of serious disaster,sand and dust storms can impact the air quality,lead to traffic accidents and even result in massive damages to national economy and natural environment.Sand and dust storms often occur in arid and semi-arid regions such as Northern China.In recent years,lots of research on sand and dust storms has been carried out.This paper established a new sand dust index model to identify the sandstorms range and strength according to the sand and dust sensitivity of mid-infrared and far-infrared bands.With the method,sandstorms range and strength can be obtained simultaneously and effectively.After extract ten times SDS information from 2005 to 2010 in China,it turned out that this method is of valuable for practical use.
