This paper presents numerical results of the performance of a new type of buckling-restrained Notch-Type triple-steel tube brace. This brace is designed according to the philosophy of "partially weaken the core element of the Buckling-Restrained Brace (BRB) to protect the other part".This design allows a control of the yielding locations, and the locations of plastic deformation initiation and propagation in the brace member. Therefore, while achieving the design objective of dissipation seismic energies and enhance the structural capacity in resisting seismic ground motions, the performance of the brace membeunder strong ground shakings is well predicted and controlled at the design stage.Numerical analysis is carried out using the finite element software ABAQUS to study the effect of the notch on the performance of the Triple-Steel Tube BRB members. The results indicate that the hysteretic curve of the proposed BRB is stable, full and symmetric.Yielding starts at the notched section and propagates along the member. The Axial Force-Axial Displacement curve consists of elastic,elasto-plastic and plastic segment.Though the yielding load and deformation of the proposed BRB are reduced due to the notch, the ultimate bearing capacity of the proposed BRB remains unaffected. This design allows the yielding location of the BRB being controlled, therefore it is not necessary to strengthen the ends of the core element of the BRB,which simplifies the fabrication process of BRB and also results in savings in materials.
