Hepatocellular carcinoma ranks among the first 10 causes of cancer related deaths wordwide, with different specific raking position in various parts of the worldwhich mean that it affect a very large number of patient.In most instances it-arises on a background of chronic liver disease and particularly of cirrhosis.This combination makes treatment strategies particularly challenging, since two potentially lethal diseases, cirrhosis and cancer, affect the same organ, which has to be the target of treatment.Consequently oncologic therapies must be as effective as possible but at the same time as-safe as possible, aiming at not worsening liver function, which would otherwise turn into a shorter rather than longer life expectancy.
