Carbohydrates are the single most abundant feed energy in diets for sows comprising 60-70 %of the total energy intake. The carbohydrate fraction represents a diverse group of compounds; from simple mono-and disaccharides to complex organized polysaccharides that make up the cell walls. The linkages between the carbohydrate components and the way the different carbohydrate molecules are interrelated have a great impact on the site of their digestion and how they influence the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract.
