The use of sub-2μm particle packed columns for fast LC separations is now well established in the analytical laboratory.Whilst facilitating high speed, high resolution separations, these fully porous columns have some practical issues.Conventional HPLC systems cannot operate at the flow rates that facilitate the optimum performance on such columns due to the backpressure generated.UHPLC equipment has been commercially for a while, however operating under such high pressures may decrease the lifetime of system components and column.Additionally the sub-2μm particle packed columns do not always produce the efficiency enhancements predicted by the theory based on particle size.
