Association between exposure to organophosphate pesticide and thyroid hormones in pregnant women

  Although animal studies suggested that organophosphate pesticides (OPs) can affect the thyroid function, little is explored in human populations.We investigated the association between OPs and thyroid hormones in Shandong, by enrolling 637 pregnant women from April 2011 to December 2013.OP exposures were assessed by analyses of dialkylphosphate (DAP) metabolites (n=413) and the concentration of thyroid hormones were measured (n=325) in pregnant women.We analyzed the relationship between DAP metabolites and thyroid hormones (n=325).Median levels of DAP metabolites were 9.81μg/L for dimethylphosphate (DMP), 0.79μg/L for dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP), 5.00μg/L for diethylphosphate (DEP), and 0.78μg/L for diethylthiophosphate (DETP).We found that total DAP concentration was negatively associated with thyroid stimulating hormone levels (β =-0.15, 95% confidence interval (CI):-0.24 to-0.05) and postively associated with free T4 levels (β =0.14, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.26).The findings suggest that OP exposures may disrupt thyroid function in pregnant women.
