This paper reviews major technological developments in prediction and prevention of the outbursts of coal and gas in the Australia coal industry over the last 100 years, with particular emphases on those that influenced or have been influential in shaping subsequent mining activities. The current approach in Australia, which utilizes threshold gas content values and management plans, has greatly reduced the number of outburst incidents. However, there are a number of aspects of the current approach that are perceived as either inadequate or inappropriate or impractical in some coal seam conditions. To address these concerns and achieve a strategic goal of economically sustainable and outburst-free coal mining, future technological development needs are proposed and presented in this paper.
