Low cost manufacture of future applications with a small carbon footprint will require a very thin outline and fast production. Areas of application include solar cells, light emitting devices, electrochromics and fuel cells. Common to those are that the functional material comprise a thin organic layer which is typically a polymeric or plastic material. The processing method is generic and the same technique i.e. slotdie coating can be used for making all four device types as will be discussed. The foil handling and product integration can be different and the application on operational mechanism for sure is. The most distinguishing feature however is that the same factory can make thin functional organic films for such a diverse set of applications which makes the carbon footprint and the capital investment in equipment even lower than anticipated until now.
