Distinguishing mesothelial cells from adenocarcinoma cells in serous body fluid cytology is of critical importance.Applying the well established cytomorphologic criteria on routinely stained cytologic smears, an accurate distinction between the two is possible in a significant number of cases.However, a sizable number of cases pose diagnostic difficulty owing to overlapping cytomorphology, necessitating the need for ancillary aids, of which the use of immunomarkers is in the forefront.
