Our survey of U.S.medical oncologists assessed changes in attitudes and practices to cancer pain management that have evolved since 1990, when the last such national survey had been conducted. Then only 51% believed that pain control in their ownpractice was acceptable, and a large majority expressed dissatisfaction with their pain management training.Since then guidelines and pain-related continuing medical education have been developed, and access to specialists in pain and palliative care has increased.
