High seed vigour is essential for successful crop establishment and therefore sustainable vegetable crop production. However, understanding of the physiological and genetic basis for seed vigour differences is still obscure.Rapid germination is a key phenotype that is known to differ with genetic background. We have used natural variation to identify and investigate loci linked to this and other traits using a range of genetic resources available for Brassica oleracea and Arabidopsis thaliana.Significant QTL for these traits have been identified and we have fine mapped the most significant rate of germination QTL (SOG1).
