Decarboxylative halogenation of carboxylic acids, the Hunsdiecker reaction,[1] is one of the fundamental functional group transformations in organic chemistry.The initial discovery required the use of dry silver salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids to react with bromine.[2] Since then, a number of modifications were introduced to simplify the procedure.However, these methods suffer from harsh reaction conditions, the use of highly toxic reagents or limited scope of applications.In addition, none is catalytic except for the decarboxylative halogenation of aromatic α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids that proceeds via a non-radical mechanism.
