Microvesicles (or microparticles) are a heterogeneous population of phospholipid rich spheres formed from blood and vascular cells during cellular activation by inflammatory cytokines, thrombin and apoptosis.Because some microvesicles contain phosphatidylserine which binds coagulation factors needed for the generation of thrombin, they are biochemically active, important in the pathophysiology of thrombosis and in the progression of occlusive vascular diseases. Our group has developed and validated a method of collection and phenotypic characterization of microvesicles.Total number, cellular origin and thrombin generating capacity of microvesicles were evaluated in a group of asymptomatic, early menopausal women who were not be identified by usual risk markers (hyperlipidemia, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, and hsCRP) for cardiovascular disease.
