Background Various mammalian species,including human being,have neural stem cells (NSCs) in central nervous system all theirlife.NSCs are capable of generating various kinds of cell within the central nervous system,including nrurons and glial cells (astrocytes,oligodendrocytes).It has been shown that various insults including cerebral ischemia,can stimulate the endogenous neural stem cell to proliferate in known neurogenic area.In adult brain,neurogenesis mainly appears in subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral cerebral ventricle and subgranular zone (SGZ) in the hippocampus.
