In this work, the interfacial fracture toughness of thermal barrier coatings 8YSZ (ZrO2+8 wt.% Y2O3) deposited on NiCoCrALY bond coat by atmospheric plasma spraying was investigated experimentally.A three–point bending experiment that can generate a single interface crack and prevent practical difficulty in controlling equally propagating growth of cracks was adopted to initiate and propagate the TC/BC interfacial crack. To obtain the crack length, inverse finite element analysis combined with digital image correction was resorted to determine the crack length according to the crack opening displacement (COD).Then, in terms of compliance theory, the critical adhesion energies of the propagation of the TC/BC interfacial crack can be reliably calculated.
