There are three major forms of cancer metastasis: blood spreading in which cancer cells gain direct access into the blood circulation and spread throughout the body;lymph spreading in which cancer cells spread via the lymphatic vessels resulting in lymph nodes metastasis;and peritoneal spreading in which cancer cells detach from the primary tumor and directly invade the peritoneum resulting in peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC).Currently, there have been standard treatment guidelines for blood metastasis and lymphatic metastasis.However, no universally accepted guideline has been established for PC treatment.Over the past decade, we have conducted a series of basic, translational and clinical studies on the diagnosis and treatment of PC, and established a PC treatment center serving the patients all over China.This brief review summarized our work in this regard.
