Embolization-induced apoptosis in meningiomas--immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study

  Preoperative embolization of meningiomas is performed to decrease blood loss at surgery.While it is also observed to produce necrosis and apoptosis in embolized tumors,very little has been described about the immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study on apoptotic tumor cells after embolization of meningiomas.In this study we pick out four definite embolized meningiomas cases.In these four cases embolization materials in tumor-feeding blood vessel are observed in paraffin section of HE staining.Immunohistochemical staining and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were submitted to observe meningiomas cells variations after embolization.The apoptosis is detected in these four cases by electron microscope and transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining.Our conclusion is that the apoptotic morphological changes is not clear by HE staining,but immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies show a definite apoptotic features in the embolized meningiomas.
