Materials Development on Polymer-Stabilized Blue phase

  Recently,polymer-stabilized blue phase(PSBP),which is one of optically isotopic liquid crystal phases,has attracted general attention because it has the advantages over a conventional nematic phase such as: i)quicker response than the nematics ii)no need for any alignment layer,iii)wide viewing angle [1,2].The advantages ii)and iii)are derived from optical isotropy of liquid crystals.To induce optically isotropic liquid crystal phases with a wide temperature range,an artificial control of coherence length of liquid crystals is the key technology.In the polymer/liquid crystal composites system,it was reported that the chirality of liquid crystal play an important role to induce optically isotropic phase [3].PSBP and polymer stabilized isotropic phase(PSIP)can be prepared by in-situ polymerization of monomers by UV-irradiation in a blue phase or an isotropic phase of precursor which is a mixture of monomers and chiral liquid crystals having blue phase.However there are some specific problems towards mass production.
