To explore the possible action of protein kinase C (PKC) in the developmental and maladaptive plasticity after spinal cord injury (SCI) of neonatal rats, 40 neonatal rats (7-14 days old) were used to prepare the SCI model by complete transection of T8 segment of spinal cord under chloral hydrate anesthesia.The BassoBeattie-Bresnahan scores of model rats were 0.4±0.5, 0.8±0.9, 1.0±0.8 and 1.2±0.8 at the 1st, 3rd, 9th and 27th day after operation respectively (n=10 each day), while that of normal animals was 21.0±0.0 (n=10).The expression of PKC and apoptosis of cells were observed in the spirial cord of neonatal rat SCI model by immunofluorescent and nuclear staining technology.It was observed that the expression of PKC in cells was highest at 1st day after SCI, then reduced, and lowest at 9th day following SCI, which presented a negative relation to the ratio of cells undergoing apoptosis after SCI.These preliminary results indicate that expression of PKC may play an important role in neuronal plasticity after SCI.
