The upper slope has been known for its unique hydro-dynamic conditions and sedimentary processes. The geomorphology in the upper slope was shaped by seafloor dynamic process which induced corresponding depositional system and stratigraphic style. The upper slope at a passive margin offshore Hainan Island is a good case to document the sedimentary process and strata based on multibeam bathymetry and high resolution seismic data as well as drilling well. The upper slope is characterized by complicated geomorphology and unique strata architecture which can be divided into two segments, namely, the eastern and western segments..The eastern segment is characterized by deep incised canyons, gullies and slope failure. The submarine canyons have been distinguished, with a length of 13-28 km, a width of 2-4 km and a maximum of 500 m of relief. They are generally oriented NNE-SSW or NNW-SSE, approximately perpendicular to the slope, but some of them show abrupt deflection in places. These submarine canyons also display both U-shape and V-shape morphology along their length. The eastern segment is dominated by erosion, escarpment and slumps as well as several separate MTDs.The shelf-margin clinoforms shows strongly upward vertical aggradation with time. The shelf break line migrated to the south and then retreated to present. The east segment belongs to the erosion-dominated slope and is the combination result of active fault, bottom current and insufficient sediment supply. The western segment has a smooth floor, gentle gradient and progradational slope clinoforms.MTDs triggered by high sedimentation rates, rapid progradation of shelf-edge are identified. The shelf-margin clinoform displays a combination of progradational and aggradational stacking patterns. The western segment of shelf break line migrated to the south with time. The western segment can be regarded as a deposition-dominated slope, and is the result of the sufficient sediment supply.Based on the descriptions of the geomorphology and high resolution seismic data, the possible depositional models of each segment have been built up.There are constant shelf break model with insufficient sediment supply in east segment and migration shelf break model with plenty sediment supply in west segment, respectively.Anomaly geological process which relate to different geomorphology characteristics and clinoform growth style along the upper continental slope of northwestern SCS margin reflect different sediment supply from the source area. The case study may contribute our understanding of sedimentary process and stratigraphic style in different sediment supply.
