This study examined inhibitory effects of ethylacetate fraction of dried ginseng (root of Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer)extract on tyrosinase activity, melanin production and expression of melanin biosynthesis-related enzymes in melanocytes. In addition, depigmenting effect in UV-B induced hyperpigmented brown guinea pig skin was also investigated. As the results, ethylacetate fraction of the ginseng extract dose dependently inhibited melanin biosynthesis in cultured melanocytes and brown guinea pig skin. Moreover, treatment of this fraction reduced tyrosinase activity and expression. These results suggested that ethylacetate fraction of dried ginseng (root of Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) extract might act as skin depigmenting raw material for cosmetics.
