Cardiovascular complications represent 60% of the causes of death in patients with type 2 diabetes.Several causes may explain this mortality excess and among these, the decreased availability of nitric oxide (NO) has increasingly gained credit. In fact, reduced NO availability has been demonstrated not only in diabetes but also in other diseases, such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, known to be associated with increased mortality due to cardiovascular causes.NO is crucial for regulating the vascular tone and maintaining the intrinsic thromboresistant and atheroprotective properties of the vascular wall.
