Along the coastal area, storm surge, an abnormal rise of water generated over and above the predicted astronomical tides, severely threaten life and property, which is associated with low pressure weather systems, such as typhoon, extratropical cyclone and cold wave.As we know,the two main meteorological factors contributing to a storm surge are a long fetch of winds spiraling inward toward the storm, and a low-pressure-induced dome of water drawn up under and trailing the storms center.To understand its formation mechanisms in east coast area of China,four individual cases of storm surge were analyzed focusing on duration, wind velocity, central pressure, translational speed, landing route, costal topography and astronomical tides.The results show that the main cause of storm surge in China coast is attributed to typhoon, and the overlap of typhoon and astronomical tides would result in severe damage in Fujian costal area,where the topography may exert additional influence of water rising.
