Background,Motivation and Objective Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States according to the CDC.In order to identify vulnerable plaques—those most likely to rupture and result in heart attack or stroke—we have developed a mechanically-steered,dual-frequency intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) system for imaging vasa vasorum,microvasculature ≤200 μm in diameter whose presence is correlated with plaque vulnerability.
