Bacteriorhodopsin is an excellent photo-sensitizer in TiO2-based solar energy conversion system for many utilities because of its high stability, broad absorption band in the visible light region and high quantum efficiency. However, high cost of the preparation of the protein restricts its industrial application. In the present work,we expressed a bacteriorhodopsin homolog from a Halorubrum species isolated from Ejinoor salt lake of China. The protein showed similar photoreaction properties as that of bacterorhodosin and most importantly E.coli-expression of the protein was achieved that will substantially decreases the preparation cost of the protein. The protein might be an excellent candidate for a photosensitizer of the TiO2-based solar energy conversion system. The expression method and photochemical properties of the protein was described in the present paper in comparison with that of bacteriorhodopsin.
