The animal development from a fertilized egg to an individual is a programmed process and was believed to be irreversible in mammals.The groundbreaking work of Yamanaka demonstrated that somatic cells can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by defined transcription factors (Oct4, Sox2, KIf4 and cMyc).
