Terrestrial plants evolved from microalgae which lived in aquatic environment. To survive in the dry land as an autotroph, which depend on light as energy source, plants developed a unique lifestyle that requires transport of many compounds across their various membranes.Recent papers reported that plant cells use ABC transporters to transport many compounds necessary for life on land.Terrestrial plants have two to four times more ABC transporter genes than other organisms.
