The potential for human and environmental toxicity associated with nanomaterials(NMs)is an increasing area of investigation.Furthermore, investigating the effects of nanoparticle(NP)exposure in the aquatic environment is of significant importance, since it ultimately receives run-off and wastewater from domestic and industrial sources. In mammalian cells,NPs have been shown to induce oxidative stress. It is hypothesized that silver NPs could modulate immune functions in freshwater crabs. To test this, the effects of commercial silver nanoparticles(AgNPs)on cellular immune and biochemical responses of freshwater crab Potamanautes warreni were determined.Oxidative stress,as measured by lipid peroxidation(LPO),antioxidant responses(including superoxide dismutase(SOD)and catalase(CAT)activities)in haemocyte, hepatopancreas and gills were assessed in crabs exposed to AgNPs.Overall, the results suggest that 14 d exposure to environmentally realistic concentrations of AgNPs causes immunomodulation and potentially harmful lessened antioxidant defences of crabs. The results obtained have shown that exposure of the crabs for 14 days to environmentally-relevant concentrations of AgNPs,resulted in alterations of immune-associated parameters(such as total haemocyte count and phagocytosis). It was also found that AgNPs caused a decrease in SOD and CAT activities, while an increase in LPO levels in tissues were obtained.
