In this work,micron-sized arbutin particles, which are well known to be an effective material for skin lightening agent, were prepared by means of the supercritical anti-solvent (SAS) process with ethanol and supercritical CO2 as the solvent and the anti-solvent,respectively.The operating ranges of temperature, pressure, the solute concentration and the injection velocity of the solution for the micronization process of the arbutin microparticles were,in turn,308.15~333.15K,90~150bar,0.5wt% and 2~12ml/min.Irrespective of the pressure, the arbutin particles produced at 308.15K showed an aciculate shape with the average breadth of 0.46 ~ 1.55μm while the increase of the temperature to 333.15K resulted in the spherical arbutin particles of tthe average diameter of 1.46~1.78μm.With an increase of the pressure, the size of the spherical particle also increased while the acicular particles became smaller. However, any significant effect of the injection velocity on the form and the size of the particles was not observed in the range of this work.
