Shakura-Sunyaev,slim,thick and adaf accretion disk models provide an analytic paradigm for understanding the black hole accretion phenomenon.I will describe the physical and mathematical foundations of them and review their properties that are most relevant for observations: ray-traced images,spectra,dynamical,thermal,viscous and magnetic stability,and oscillatory modes.A comparison with advanced numerical simulations will be given.
