It is well known that gender differences exist in risk and outcome of ischemic stroke. In addition, surgical menopause (long term ovariectomy) is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimers disease (AD), although the mechanisms are poorly understood. The current study addressed whether long term ovariectomy alters sensitivity of the female hippocampus to ischemic stroke damage and causes dysregulation ofNADPH oxidase and AD-related proteins.Adult rats were subjected to global cerebral ischemia one week or ten weeks after ovariectomy.
