Chemically modified Wollastonite is growing in popularity as a versatile additive in paint and coatings to reduce cost and improve performance. Wollastonite (calcium metasilicate) a naturally occurring mineral, has unique chemistry and acicular structure, which allows formulators to improve the cohesive strength of their coating giving better corrosion and barrier properties, extend in-can stability due to its high pH while being thermally stable. Chemically modified wollastonite as an auxiliary pigment extends traditional corrosion inhibitors and has been shown to be an effective anticorrosive pigment on its own. Controlling ionic permeability and chemical reactivity of the binder, chemically modified wollastonite contributes to performance with its acicular shape via the chemical bond occurring between the surface treatment and the binder.
