Residential differentiation in Daejeon, Korea

  With a population of 140 million,the metropolitan city of Daejeon is the sixth largest city in Korea.The increase in population and municipal area during the 1980s led to the formation of a definite urban structure.At present,the city reveals multiple nuclei structure,consisting of two CBDs and two sub-CBDs.Since the late 1980s,the service industry became the leading economic sector in Daejeon mainly in terms of professional activities.The businesses that were mainly responsible for this trend were transport,administration,scientific research and development,tourism,and recreation.The city began to expand after the opening of the Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan) Railway in 1900; this railway passed through Daejeon,and the old town began to develop around the station.After the Daejeon station was built,the population of Daejeon grew consistently.It was mainly in the 1980s,that Doonsan New Town and Daedeok Science Town were established.As compared with the old town,the Doonsan New Town has well-appointed commercial facilities and neighborhood parks.The residents of Daedeok Science Town are supposed to have several features with education level,which would result in differences with another town in terms of resident construction.Therefore,the purpose of this research is to grasp the social structure of residential areas and how it evolves with the development of a new town.For this purpose,I used data that are aggregated in terms of dong,the smallest administrative unit.In addition,the residential differentiation was estimated using factor analysis.The variation in factor analysis is based on population,housing,and industry.To assess a recent situation,the target years have been set as 2005.
