Effect of surface modification of magnetic nanoparticles on synthesis of Fe3O4@PS microspheres

　　In synthesis of magnetic polymer microspheres using dispersion polymerization,surface characteristics of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs),such as hydrophilicity and electronegativity,play a key role to influence the conformation and monodispersity of the microspheres.Here,we investigate the effect of the surface hydrophilicity of MNPs on the formation of microspheres.The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of a surfactant is a measure of the degree to which it is hydrophilic or lipophilic.Thus sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS),polyacrylic acid-1800 (PAA-1800),sodium oleate (OA-Na) and oleic acid (OA) were used to modify the surface of MNPs according to their distinct HLB,respectively.The HLB values of the reagents were shown in Table 1.These modified MNPs were then used for synthesis of Fe3O4@PS microspheres by dispersion polymerization.The structure and morphology of the beads were investigated by IR spectroscopy (Fig.1) and SEM (Fig.2).The results revealed that the MNPs with different surface hydrophilicity greatly affected the formation of microspheres.
