Paeoveitol,a pair of norditerpene enantiomers, were isolated by Chen from the root of Paeonia veitchii (Chuan-Chi-Shao),which has a long history of using as the composition in many traditional medicine formulas for the treatment of depression-like disorders in China.1 The challenging structural features and uncharacterized bioactivity of paeoveitol makes this compound an unusually appealing synthetic target.Zhao demonstrated elegant synthetic strategy that applied an unusual intermolecular ortho-quinone methide[4 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction for the synthesis of the paeoveitol.
