This paper discusses advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in the Netherlands. The Dutch AMI has been deployed in reaction to an EU request. Its implementation is desirable in facilitating the transition from the current fossil fuel-centric energy production to the use of more renewable energy resource. Moreover, implementation of Dutch AMI is necessary to accommodate the expected significant increase in the need for electrical transmission capacity.Furthermore, as a remote monitoring and data collecting system, AMI can provide data to other intelligent applications to create whole new markets and enhance the current services as well. Some applications will be elaborated on in this paper.Research findings were drawn from desk research on the relevant legal documents and published research papers and interviews with major stakeholders. This research introduces Dutch AMI and fosters the utilization of AMI in the state-of-the-art consumer life context.
