Cardiovascular disease remains the main cause of mortality and morbidity in subjects with diabetes.Moreover, the majority of individuals with cardiac ischemia display abnormalities in glucose metabolism, suggesting that cardiovascular disease and diabetes share common risk factors.Over the past decade, mortality following cardiac ischemia has significantly decreased in the non-diabetic population due to more aggressive treatment strategies.In contrast, and despite advances in treatment, mortality following ischemic events in individuals with diabetes remains unacceptably high.Statin therapy has been a corner stone for the treatment/prevention of cardiovascular disease and it appears to be equally effective in the diabetic and the non-diabetic population.However, dyslipidemia in diabetes is characterized by raised triglycerides and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), both of which are only marginally modulated by statins.
