Upgrading of Electrostatic Precipitators for Sinter Plants with Pulse Energization

Waste gasses from sinter strands are one of the largest sources of gasses and dust from steel production.The electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is the only high efficient de-dusting system suitable to catch the dust from sinter strands and it is widely used worldwide. Traditionally, one or two identical chambers are located directly after the waste gas exhaust of the sinter line, followed by one exhaust fan for each chamber and then led to the stack. Usually, traditionally 3 or 4 field ESP’s are used, which might be suitable for 100 mg/Nm3. Lately, new requirements for dedusting are requested by the authorities and new ways to improve the efficiency of a precipitator is required. By installation of FLS Pulse Coromax systems as a power supply for the ESP, using ultra short (microsecond) pulses – emission and energy reduction can be greatly improved. The system is very suitable for upgrading existing ESP’s, as this often can be done without stopping or disturbing the sinter production. By using Pulse Coromax system, the dust emission “as a rule of thumb” can be reduced more than 50 % and together with some adjustment inside the ESP even 80 % emission can be achieved. For new ESP’s, less than 20 mg/Nm3 dust emission can be achieved with just 4 fields. With 3 fields, less than 50 mg/Nm3 can be achieved. Simultaneously with dust emission reduction, the Pulse Coromax will reduce the power consumption with at least 60 %, due to the ultra short pulsing technique. To understand the operation better, a description of the pulse theory is presented with the factors influencing the performance. The practical implementation is described with a Case Story from upgrading an ESP for a 146 m2 sinter line, where dust emission was reduced from above 200 mg/Nm3 to just 5 mg/Nm3.
