The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of environmental pollution with heavy metals on the accumulation of lead, cadmium, zinc and copper,δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity and total proteins in tissues of shrews(Sorex sp.),from the vicinity of smelter “Trep?a”.The concentration of metals in femur, teeth, spleen, liver, and kidney of shrews, form contaminated area were significantly higher(P< 0.001)in comparison to control. The target organ of accumulation for Pb and Zn was femur, for Cd kidney and for Cu teeth. The ALAD activity of blood, liver and kidney of shrews from contaminated area was significantlyinhibited(P <0.001),while the total proteins were significantly lower(P<0.001)in comparison to control.A positive correlation between Zn concentration in femur and ALAD in blood(r=0.723; P<0.01),liver(r=0.794; P<0.003),kidney(r=0.773; P<0.006),and between Zn concentration in kidney and ALAD in liver(r=0.976; P<0.003)and kidney(r=0.988; P<0.0001),was established in shrews of contaminated area.A negative correlation between Pb concentration in femur and ALAD in blood(r=-0.986; P<0.002),andPb in kidney and ALAD in kidney(r=-0.886; P<0.03)in the shrews from control area was established.A positive correlation between Zn concentration in femur and ALAD in blood(r=0.899; P<0.0001)and kidney(r=0.820; P<0.001),in shrews from control area was established. From these studies it could be concluded that the shrews, can be suitable bio-indicator organism in the monitoring of heavy metal pollution.
