Thraustochytrids are unicellular eukaryotic organisms of the Kingdom Stramenopila that produce zoospores as a means of reproduction and hence previously considered as zoosporic fungi.These organisms have recently gained economic importance due to the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, squalene etc.High production of omega-3 PUFA-docosahexanoic acid (DHA) has garnered interest in industrial sector for its commercial exploitation.
