Plasmonic Nanoparticles and Nanostructures for Higher Performance Solar Cells

　　One of the major issues facing solar energy production is the relative high cost of solar cells.To keep these costs competitive with other energy sources, one can aim at increasing the power energy conversion efficiency of solar cells, in particular those that can be produced most economically such as organic solar photovoltaics.An appealing method for increasing solar cell performance resides in a strategy for light trapping in solar devices with the help of plasmonic nanoparticles and nanostructures, by making use of the specific absorption properties of these in the spectral domain of interest.In principle, addition of nanoparticles to devices is a simple process that can be realized without significantly increasing manufacturing costs.As simple as it may appear however, this strategy of tight trapping also has its limitations.The principles governing plasmonic solar cells will be presented and the challenges facing their realization discussed.
