We will give a brief review on qualitative studies of the Camassa-Holm equation,but The focus of this talk is on wave breaking and propagation speed for the Camassa-Holm equation.We will show that the propagation speed is infinite in the sense that a strong solution of the Cauchy problem with compact initial profile can not be compactly supported at any later time unless it is the zero solution.This is a part of the joint work with A.A.Himonas,G.Misiolek and G.Ponce.Finally,by applying McKeans theorem on wave breaking for the Camassa-Holm equation,we show that for any given smooth initial datum with compact support,the corresponding solution breaks down in finite time.
