In 1994, carbon ion radiotherapy was begun at the NIRS (National Institute of Radiological Sciences) using HIMAC (Heavy-Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba),which was the worlds first heavy ion accelerator complex dedicated to medical use in a hospital environment.
