Dense cranial eleetroaeupuneture stimulation (DCEAS) is a novel stimulatio n mode in which electrical stimulation is delivered on dense acupoints located on the fore head mainly innervatedby the trigeminal nerve.Neuroanatomical evidence suggests that, c ompared to the spinal-supraspinal pathways, the trigeminal sensory pathway has much inti mate connections with the brainstem reticular formation, particularly the dorsal raphe nucle us (DRN) and the locus coeruleus (LC), both of which are the major resources of seroton ergie (5-HT) and noradrenergic neuronal bodies, respectively, and play a pivotal role in th e regulation of sensation, emotion, sleep, and cognition processing.This has led us to ass ume that direct stimulation on forehead aeupoints in the trigeminal territory could more ef fieiently produce therapeutic response in neuropsychiatrie disorders.Several pilot studies ha ve shown the benefit of DCEAS and similar interventions in patients with headache, refra ctory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), postpartum depression, and insomnia.Most ree ently, we have further demonstrated the effectiveness of DCEAS as an additional therapy i n the early phase of the treatment of major depression.This talk will discuss related ratio nale for DCEAS and report the results of our several clinical studies of DCEAS in patien ts with various neuropsychiatric disorders.
