Doubly excited helium is a prototype quantum system with electron-electron correlations that must be considered in the lowest order to reproduce the atomic response to external perturbation. The experiments on He doubly excited states (DES) with light are marked by the synchrotron era that provided the benchmark spectroscopic data, as well as accurate simulations of the single-photon ionization cross sections in the 1960s-2000s.
