Among the several genetic mechanisms explaining female mate choice, the "sexy son" mechanism is rarely tested with experiments across animal taxa (Tregenza and Wedell 2000;Neff and Pitcher 2005;Andersson and Simmons 2006;Huk and Winkel 2008).Rodents rely heavily on chemosensory signals for mate choice and many inbred and congenic lines of mice and rats have been used as genetic models of odor-based mate choice (Roberts and Gosling 2003;Zhang and Zhang 2011).
