Strong acid rain was observed in summer 2007 over Liaoning,a Province located in Northeasterm China,previously considered as non-acid rain area.This study,carried on the Nested Air Quality Prediction Modeling System (NAQPMS) in coupling with an on-line source tagging module,assessed the role of the regional chemical transport in acidification process over Liaoning through analysis of the polluting sources.Two horizontal layers (lower and upper boundary layers) were dissociated to delve into the variation of the acid contribution from identified sources.As a result,the regional chemical transport significantly impacted acid accumulation over Liaoning,particularly at the upper boundary (1.2km).At this layer,the contribution of surrounding sources to acid mean concentration over Liaoning was estimated to about 67%,mainly from Shandong (18%),Hebei (16%),Tianjin (12%) and Korean Peninsula (9%).Liaoning local acid contribution was more pronounced at the lower boundary layer (120m) with summer average of 58%.Many cities in Liaoning,such as Benxi,Dalian,Anshan,Chaohu,Panjin,Tieling,Liaoyang and Shenyang were revealed as the most important sources of Liaoning local acid production and distribution.The findings highlight critical deficiencies in the National Acid Rain Control Program,and provide,not only with the perspective of the impact of the trans-boundary pollution on the acidification process,but also with the perspective of review and improvement of the environmental impact assessment and management.Review of acid rain control strategies at both local and regional scales is therefore necessary to oversee resulting environmental impacts.
