Primary breakup of a paint liquid by a coaxial high-speed gas jet used in spray painting processes

  Coaxial high-speed gas jets are widely used to atomize paint liquids in spray painting processes,such as using pneumatic or HVLP spray guns,where the liquid jet is broken in a high-speed annular gas stream.Usually,a critical state with sonic speed does exist around the exit of the liquid jet.At the same time,a so-called shaping gas flow is used to form the spray pattern.The initial breakup of the paint liquid in such a kind of atomizer was investigated numerically.Simulations using the volume of fluid method(VOF)were carried out.The regimes of liquid jet breakup are discussed within the parameter range of Reynolds number,Weber number,liquid jet diameter and the ratio of the mass fluxes between the gas stream and the liquid jet.Images of jet instabilities and primary atomization in the region close to the nozzle were used to analyze the intact liquid length and the effect of the shaping gas jet on the atomization process,in order to elucidate the dominant mechanisms in the primary breakup of the liquid jet.
