采用就地保护和迁地保护两种野生动物保护的重要手段,IUCN野外灭绝物种麋鹿在全球范围内得以繁衍.2013年12月至2014年5月通过电话咨询和电子邮件等方式对国外62个动物园或保护区进行调查咨询,确认54个调查地点有麋鹿分布,另外8个调查地点没有答复,这54个调查地点分布于非洲、澳洲、欧洲、亚洲、南美洲和北美洲,共25个国家,拥有麋鹿1022只,种群数量超过50只的有4处.2013年6月至2015年9月,通过现场调查、电话咨询、电子邮件等方式对我国204个动物园、自然保护区、驯养繁殖中心、人民公园、森林公园和湿地公园等进行调查,其中95处曾经或现在有麋鹿分布,93处没有麋鹿分布,16处没联系上,共确认67个分布点现在饲养麋鹿,麋鹿总数达4798只,其中种群数量超过50只的有6处.大丰麋鹿保护区拥有265只半野生麋鹿;石首有野生麋鹿约500只(包含三合院、杨坡坦、湖南华容县胜峰林场),湖南东洞庭湖约有野生麋鹿70只.
