ACTMIP: A Web-based Remote Collaborative System for Medical Image Processing

  Medical images, both film and digital format, play an irreplaceable role in realms of medical treatment, teaching, and research.At present, many powerful medical image processing softwares are available to us, but most of them are traditional PACS-like systems which can only be used in LAN (Local Area Network).Besides, with the detailed division of medical science, worldwide collaboration and resource sharing have become more and more important in diagnosis and treatment.However, traditional PACS-like systems can hardly support such kind of collaboration and resource sharing, and this limitation has become increasingly obvious in this globalized world.Fortunately, as Web technology advances, the limitation will disappear.The reason is that Web-based applications will not only provide the same image processing power as PACS-like systems, but also allow users to access the systems wherever the Internet is available.To demonstrate this thesis, this paper presents a Web-based, remote collaborative medical image processing system-ACTMIP.It provides two dimensional and three dimensional DICOM image collaborative processing services along with text, audio, and video message communications.Moreover, it can be available at the present of Web-browsers conveniently, without any extra requirement of client installation.In the end, this paper evaluates the prototype system using several kinds of DICOM data sets, which demonstrates the good performance of our system.
